Leeds United finally beat Coventry City in hot race to sign 22-year-old star defender

Leeds United have joined Coventry City in the chase for Milan van Ewijk of SC Heerenveen.

According to Dutch journalist Sander de Vries, Leeds United have joined Coventry City in their pursuit of SC Heerenveen right-back Milan van Ewijk.

Coventry’s interest has been known for some time, and given that Brooke Norton-Cuffy was brought in on loan from Arsenal for the second part of last season, it’s not surprising to see Mark Robins want a right-wing-back again this summer.

Coventry’s approach for Heerenveen’s van Ewijk was rejected, according to Leeuwarder Courant journalist de Vries.

Their interest was first reported much earlier in the summer, but since then, both Belgian team Anderlecht and the Sky Blues have made offers that have been rejected, and no negotiations for the 22-year-old’s services are claimed to be ongoing.

Having spent time in Feyenoord’s academy as a youngster, van Ewijk was picked up from amateur club Excelsior Maassluis in 2019 by ADO Den Haag, who gave the full-back his first taste of professional football as a teenager.

Van Ewijk then signed a four-year contract with Heerenveen, where he has played 67 times and scored seven goals in two years.

Van Ewijk’s most recent season was his most successful, with him rotating between wing-back and right-back, appearing 40 times in all competitions and notching six goals and three assists in 2022/23.

Van Ewijk has became a Netherlands U-21 international and was a member of their team for the European U-21 Championships after joining Heerenveen.
