Leeds United are on the verge of announcing a £30,000-per-week signing as their latest addition ahead of the forthcoming Championship season.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Leeds United will confirm Karl Darlow’s arrival at Elland Road ‘imminently’ following a major twist in the hunt for the Newcastle United star’s signature.
Daniel Farke, who was hired as the Whites’ new manager earlier this month, is eager to bolster his team ahead of a drive for an instant return to the Premier League.
Darlow took a step closer to being named as Leeds’ latest acquisition on Thursday, according to transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano, when he began undergoing medical testing.
According to the Italian journalist, the Yorkshire giants have reached an agreement with Newcastle as Farke aims to add the goalkeeper, who has made 100 Premier League appearances for the club, to his choices.
Leeds is thought to be paying £400,000 for Darlow, which is much less than the initial £5 million price tag.
After entering the final two years of his £30,000-per-week contract at St James’ Park, Newcastle had been willing to trade the 32-year-old for a low amount.
Leeds appear to have fended off competition from Bournemouth, who stepped up their interest earlier this month and were willing to offer him top flight action.
But Darlow showed last season that he is willing to drop into the Championship in order to get regular game-time as he made 12 appearances during a loan spell with Hull City, keeping five clean sheets in the process.
Jacobs believes Leeds are on the verge of seeing Darlow putting pen-to-paper, with the deal expected to be announced in the coming days.
The acclaimed journalist believes Bournemouth’s interest in Andrei Radu was a watershed point in the Whites’ pursuit of the former Nottingham Forest star.
“I think Darlow will join Leeds soon,” Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT. Eddie Howe said in Atlanta that he expects it to be completed in the coming days.
“It’s a fantastic signing for Leeds.” Bournemouth were obviously interested as well, but instead signed Andrei Radu.
“Leeds never felt like the Darlow to Bournemouth deal was complete.” They persisted, convinced that Darlow desired them. They are now quite likely to sign the 32-year-old in the next days, and adding a goalkeeper has been a top priority for Daniel Farke.”
