A look at what James Maddison has said about his future in the wake of new interest from Newcastle United.
James Maddison has already hinted at where he sees opportunities amid reports of a move to Newcastle United.
Maddison has been linked with a move to St James’ Park, among other clubs, but he is still at Leicester City after five years and 150 league appearances. However, the midfielder may be at a crossroads as he enters the final year of his contract this summer.
Leicester will be hoping to agree a new contract, but if they don’t, this summer will be their last chance to get a big fee for the England international, and Newcastle could come back with a bid, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
“Then a creative midfielder. “There is a player they really like, and he is doing very well with Leicester,” Romano said on the House of Champions Podcast. “He is a player they always had on top of their list and I am sure they will try again before the summer. I’m not sure how much competition there will be because this type of player is always on the radar of major clubs, but Newcastle will be interested.
Maddison hasn’t said much about his future in recent months, but he did speak after the transfer window closed last summer, and when asked about Leicester’s lack of business, he seemed to imply that he was enjoying life as a big fish in a small pond.
“I think there’s a sigh of relief after it closes, especially among some of the staff at football clubs,” he told Sky Sports.
“I think it definitely can be [a chance for others to shine after a lack of Leicester signings]. In difficult times, you need your big players and top players to rally the troops. And, at times, put the team on your back.”
Maddison has appeared in 17 Premier League games this season, scoring nine goals and assisting on five others.
