Eddie Howe intends to build his Newcastle United squad around a £40 million star.
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Newcastle United want to build their team around Bruno Guimaraes.
The Brazilian has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, but O’Rourke believes the Magpies will try to keep him by offering him a new contract.
According to one Spanish report, Real Madrid may make an offer for Guimaraes this summer if they fail to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.
The 25-year-old only joined Newcastle last year in a deal worth around £40 million, according to Sky Sports, but he has been a huge success for the Tyneside club, which explains why other clubs are now interested in him.
Newcastle have a really, really talented player there, and the fans love him – and rightly so,” Alan Shearer said on Match of the Day in August (via The Shields Gazette) when discussing Guimaraes.
Newcastle are obviously under no pressure to sell the former Lyon man this summer, having signed him on a contract until 2026.
Newcastle want Guimaraes to be their future, but O’Rourke believes it will be difficult for him to say no to Real Madrid if they come knocking.
“He seems pretty happy at Newcastle United,” the journalist told GiveMeSport. He’s also been instrumental in their recent rise, and Newcastle are eager to reward him with a new contract in order to quell speculation that he might leave.
“I believe Newcastle want to build their team around him because we know how important he is to Eddie Howe’s side. But if Real Madrid comes calling, it will be difficult to resist or turn down.”
It would be surprising if Guimaraes left Newcastle so quickly, given his recent comments about his love for the Tyneside club.
“We played Leicester City at home, and I think that’s when I fell in love with Newcastle,” he told The Players’ Tribune.
“It was an atmosphere I’d never seen before, even in Brazil,” Guimaraes later added, speaking about his emotions after scoring his second goal that day. “I remember collapsing on the pitch at the whistle and just thanking God for bringing me here.”
Given the foregoing and the length of his contract, Guimaraes is unlikely to leave St James’ Park anytime soon.
