Loris Karius‘ strange season could soon take another unexpected turn.
Despite the defeat to Manchester United, the German impressed on his Newcastle United debut in the Carabao Cup final after nearly two years out of any first-team action.
While it’s difficult to see Karius getting much of a run from here, given Martin Dubravaka’s availability in the Premier League in Nick Pope‘s absence, his Wembley performance may serve as a springboard for a career that had been stalled.
In fact, it appears that clubs are already keeping a close eye on his situation.
According to FC Inter News, Inter Milan are considering a free transfer for the 29-year-old at the end of the season.
With Samir Handanovic’s contract coming to an end as he approaches 40, Karius is reportedly one of the options the San Siro giants are considering to replace him.
Karius deserves a second chance at redemption.
Clearly, it’s difficult to talk about Karius without mentioning the 2018 Champions League final, in which he made two critical errors that allowed Real Madrid to defeat Liverpool.
Nonetheless, it has since been confirmed that the ‘keeper was concussed, and to be honest, that should be the end of the matter.
With only one appearance since signing, a long-term future at Newcastle appears unlikely. Pope has excelled this season, and Martin Dubravka (future dependent) provides a high-quality back-up, but Karius’ performance at Wembley offered hope of a return to the top flight.
A move to Inter would be a declaration of intent. He’s no longer a comic figure, and on a free transfer, he wouldn’t be much of a risk anyway.
Karius deserves a second chance. It just won’t happen in Newcastle.
