In recent years, the Tyneside club has not been shy about approaching other English clubs in an attempt to sign their players.
Names like Dan Burn, Joe Willock, Matt Targett, and Nick Pope have all moved to St. James’ Park from other clubs around the country.
Looking ahead to the next transfer window, the Magpies have already targeted another top-flight duo.
McTominay and Maddison are two names on Newcastle’s transfer target list for the upcoming summer window, according to a recent Football Insider report.
Focusing on McTominay, the Scotsman has started just seven of the 16 Premier League games he’s played this season, suggesting that a move away from Old Trafford to Newcastle, where he may have a better chance of playing regularly, could be appealing to the 26-year-old.
Then with Maddison, he could be seen as a more exciting signing for the Toon to make given how he has scored nine goals and delivered five assists in 18 league outings this season.
After making two bids for the Englishman during the previous summer transfer window, it’s clear that the Tyneside club is a big fan of the player, who is about to enter the final year of his contract at Leicester City.
With Jonjo Shelvey leaving Newcastle in January, Isaac Hayden and Jeff Hendrick on loan, and Matty Longstaff out of contract this summer, it’s easy to see why Eddie Howe may want to add some extra players to his midfield, such as McTominay and Maddison, who have a combined weekly wage of £170k.
Overall, given the two midfielders’ top-flight experience and Newcastle’s previous transfer record of signing players from English clubs, if they are able to land deals for both McTominay and Maddison, this could be a smart double swoop for the Magpies.
