Michigan DT Kris Jenkins continues to play through ankle injury

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Turns out, the ankle “tweak” that Kris Jenkins said he was dealing with a couple of weeks ago was a bit more serious than initially thought.

Michigan’s starting defensive tackle has been playing through a high-ankle sprain that he suffered in the Oct. 7 game at Minnesota, which might explain his lower-than-expected production on the stat sheet.

“He’s really been dealing with that,” defensive line coach Mike Elston told reporters on Wednesday. “He hasn’t been moving as well. He’s been fighting through it. He’s a warrior.”

According to Elston, the 6-foot-3, 305-pound Jenkins — an honorable mention all-Big Ten selection last year — hasn’t missed a day with the team since suffering the injury. Michigan is 10-0 and ranked No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings ahead of Saturday’s game at Maryland (Noon, FOX), where Jenkins is still expected to play.

“Hasn’t missed a practice; hasn’t missed anything,” Elston said. “He’s battled through that, so his production is down a little bit. But he’s an incredible leader and he goes out there and executes.”
