Plymouth argyle boss Wayne Rooney says new sign player set to make Plymouth Argyle debut against Watford

Rooney said: “I think he’s a very good goalkeeper. He’s someone who we identified as a possible replacement for Michael when I first came in, in case Michael left. When that happened we approached Blackpool.

“From our point of view and Dan’s point of view, we knew he wanted to come here, and then we were waiting on Blackpool. It was out of our control really but I’m delighted we got it done and he will start on Tuesday. My concern was whether he was cup-tied because he was on the bench (against Burton) but he can play, so he will play.”

Watford have had a superb start to the season under former Manchester United and England midfielder Tom Cleverley, winning their first three Championship matches as well as beating MK Dons 5-0 in the Carabao Cup first round.

Argyle progressed to the second round of the competition with a 3-0 victory over Cheltenham Town at Home Park. Rooney said: “It’s important, it’s a cup I have won a few times.

“I think for players, for fans, going on a cup run is exciting. Of course there will be some changes purely because of the workload the players put in (against QPR) but it’s a game we want to try to win and get through to the next round.

“It will be a difficult game but I feel we have improved the squad so we have got players who are more than capable of coming in and helping us try to win.”

He added: “It gives the lads who haven’t maybe got the minutes they wanted the chance to get some minutes as well, but the team I field on Tuesday will be one I believe can go through in the cup.

“Watford have had a good start to the season. There is lots of pace, lots of energy in the team so we expect a very difficult game but we have to be confident enough to go there and believe we can win. It’s the same with every game.”
