Aston Villa insider baffled after what Unai Emery did v Ipswich Town

Bryan King cannot understand why Unai Emery continues to play Diego Carlos for Aston Villa.

The ex-Villa scout insists the club are slightly weak in the centre-back department.

Carlos started in the 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town at Portman Road Stadium on Sunday (29 September), with Jamie Redknapp insisting the 31-year-old was “terrorised”.

And King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – doesn’t understand why Carlos continues to start.

“Liam Delap dominated Carlos, especially with the second goal,” King said.

“It looked in the last quarter of the game as if Ipswich Town were offering far more than Villa. I think Villa thought the game was won. Therefore, they tried to slow things down and keep possession, but it backfired.

“Ipswich Town at home are a formidable little club. They kept going and going, and for me, they got the just rewards. The game should have been tied up by Villa, it wasn’t, and they allowed Ipswich to nick a point.

“Why is Emery playing Carlos? If he wanted him gone in the summer, why is he playing? Is it because of a shortage of central defenders? Soon they are going to be coming up against some big teams, and that is an important position.

“At the moment, Villa seem to be a little bit short in that department.”

Unai Emery continues to start Diego Carlos for Aston Villa

Carlos’ start against Ipswich Town was his second in as many Premier League games.

However, it wasn’t long ago that the Brazillian looked to be on his way out of the club. Therefore, his reintroduction to the team might have confused a fair few supporters.

He has looked suspect in both of his Premier League starts this season.

As a result, injuries or not, Emery needs to find a way of playing without him.
