Bryan King admits he has never rated Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne amid a brand-new contract extension claim.
The ex-Villa scout was surprised when the Frenchman moved to Villa Park from Everton.
As reported by L’Equipe (9 September), Digne could be tempted to sign a new contract with Unai Emery’s side, with his current deal set to expire in 2026.
But King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – is not the biggest fan of the 31-year-old.
“I would think that Villa will be looking for somebody younger, that is for sure,” King said.
“I’ve never rated Digne, I didn’t rate him at Everton and I was surprised when Villa signed him. He has done alright at the club, nothing outstanding.
“I certainly wouldn’t put him up there with the Premier League’s best left-backs. He is getting older, and I would have thought he’d be looking to go back to France.

It wasn’t long ago that Digne was being linked with an exit from Aston Villa (The Athletic, 7 August).
Therefore, some supporters might be surprised to now learn that the Frenchman could be set for a longer stay with the club instead.
He will be turning 33 in 2026 when his current deal expires. As a result, it would be a surprise to see any contract extension be a long-term one.
However, Digne is an experienced player who is perhaps a useful figure to have behind the scenes.
While it remains to be seen whether or not his stay at Villa Park will be extended, it is fair to suggest that there would be arguments for and against the decision.
On the one hand, Digne’s continued presence could help the club progress, with young players able to learn from the veteran.
However, on the other hand, Villa could be wise to cut ties and bring in a younger player who perhaps doesn’t cost as much weekly.
