Deal ongoing as Aston Villa are now ready to sign £35m Spain defender

Pau Torres has agreed to join Aston Villa from Villarreal, with the Spain defender estimated to cost approximately £35 million in a transfer that reunites him with Unai Emery.

Torres is thought to have agreed personal terms for the transfer, with Villarreal accepting Villa’s bid for a player who is out of contract at the end of next season during negotiations on Thursday. He was Emery’s major summer target, and the 26-year-old will provide significant defensive depth to Villa’s team.

Bayern Munich has been following Torres, who has 23 caps for Spain, after his outstanding efforts in La Liga last season. However, with the German champions likely to sign Napoli’s Kim Min-jae for €50 million (£43 million), Torres will reunite with Emery after the manager spent two years in charge of Villarreal.

Torres, a product of Villarreal’s development system, has made over 170 appearances for the Spanish club and was a member of Spain’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Bayern Munich’s signing of South Korean defender Kim on a five-year contract will allow Paris Saint-Germain to finalize the sale of France defender Lucas Hernandez. The 27-year-old is projected to cost approximately €50 million.
