DONE DEAL: Birmingham City Beat Championship sides to Secure £2million Winger from Scottish Giants

Birmingham City are closing in on the signing of Scottish giants Rangers’ winger Scott Wright, beating Championship opposition as the transfer deadline fast approaches.

The player will be the second Rangers outgoing to land at St Andrews after the addition of Ben Davies, who linked up with the League One outfit on a season long loan a few days ago.

With Wright entering the final year of his contract in Glasgow it has been expected that the player would leave the club having also fallen down the pecking order. He had been close to moving to Turkish side Pendikspor last season, but the move ultimately failed to get over the line despite a £500,000 fee having been agreed. However, Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday had reportedly been interested according to journalist David Edgar, but neither club were able to compete a deal.

Reports in Scotland suggested that Rangers would demand a fee up to £2million, despite his contract situation. Now according to journalist David Robson, the Blues have agreed a deal to bring Wright to the club this summer.

Birmingham Make a Splash in the Market

Birmingham’s big spending in the summer window has surprised some in League One. Their willingness to spend seven figure sums regularly has left some clubs unable to compete. The additions of Alfie May, Marc Leonard, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Willum Willumsson and Emil Hannson shuck the marketplace as even Championship competition were blown out the water.

However, the moves have all been smart after 11 players departed the relegated side, 14 have been brought in, with the majority being below the age of 25 presenting the prospect of future returns in their investments.

They have unsurprisingly started well in the third tier, occupying fifth, just ahead of Lincoln City and two points behind leaders Stockport County, having won two and drawn one. With a new manager and a host of new players that will be bedding into the league it may take a few weeks before we see them at their best, but if they can remain competitive in the meantime it presents an ominous prospect for League One this season.
