The Bruins did some staff juggling Wednesday, most notably welcoming Jay Leach back to the organization as an assistant coach.
In addition, longtime assistant Joe Sacco has been promoted to associate coach and assistant John McLean has been shifted to the development staff, where he will serve as a skating and skills coach.
Leach served as the Providence Bruins coach from 2017-21, compiling a 136-77-26 record.
“Jay was a very successful coach with the Providence Bruins where he greatly impacted our player development system, and he also brings valuable experience as an assistant coach from the Seattle Kraken,” general manager Don Sweeney said in a statement. “We believe Jay will integrate quickly and complement our current staff as he comes back to the Bruins to work with our defense corps.”
Leach played in 70 career NHL games with the Bruins, Devils, Sharks, Canadiens, and Lightning.
Sacco, the former Medford High and Boston University standout, has been a Boston assistant since 2014 and perennially directs one of the league’s top penalty-killing units.
“Joe has been an integral part of this staff due to his experience and the passion he brings to our group every day,” said coach Jim Montgomery.
Sweeney said McLean “will remain integrated with our current staff as well as broaden his scope to work with our entire player development system.”
