Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon has a long road ahead of him if he wants to prove his worth to Ange Postecoglou.
Reguilon’s Spurs career looks to be all but over after his performance for Brentford against West Ham United at the London Stadium on Monday 26 February.
Thomas Frank’s side were beaten 4-2 by the Hammers with Reguilon suffering arguably one of the worst evenings of his Premier League career.
Having joined Spurs from Real Madrid in 2020, the Spaniard has made 67 appearances for the North London club, but has fallen out of favour in recent seasons.
He has been sent out on loan three times over the past couple of years, and after Manchester United activated a break clause in his loan agreement this past January, he joined up with Brentford for the remainder of the 2023/24 season (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 17 January).

However, just like his time at Tottenham, his Brentford career is quickly going downhill.

Just a few short weeks ago, Reguilon was showing signs of rediscovering his best form.
He was handed his first Brentford start against Manchester City in a 3-1 defeat on Monday 5 February, and although he was on the losing side, his defensive work was rather impressive.
As per Sofascore, Reguilon won 100 per cent of his aerial duels and six of his eight ground duels while he also made two clearances, three interceptions and four tackles.
He did struggle going forward, something which would be an issue for Postecoglou, but demonstrated in a 2-0 win against Wolves at Molineux on Saturday 10 February that he still has some quality in that area of the pitch.
Against Gary O’Neil’s side, Reguilon grabbed an assist, played two key passes and provided two accurate crosses into the box.
After a couple of mixed performances against Liverpool and Manchester City, albeit in two very tough games, all of Reguilon’s hard work in a Brentford shirt was undone by a nightmare performance against West Ham.
Just as he was beginning to perhaps convince a few people watching back at Tottenham that he deserves another chance in North London, he provided a reminder to those same people why they let him leave in the first place.
Against David Moyes’ side he managed to complete just 53 per cent of his passes, and could only provide one accurate cross into the box from his four attempts.
Defensively he won just 50 per cent of his ground duels, one of his three aerial duels and was dribbled past three times as West Ham enjoyed plenty of joy down his side.
Giving possession away 18 times and finding himself in the referee’s book was the icing on the cake and a clear sign that the left-back has no future at Spurs.
For both parties, a permanent exit for Reguilon this summer seems as if it would be the best solution.
