Bayern Munich did not devise an “anti-Kylian Mbappe plan,” according to Kingsley Coman, to help them defeat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
WHAT OCCURED?
In a heavyweight European last-16 clash, the Bundesliga champions faced the French football kings. Bayern advanced to the quarter-finals with relative ease, winning 3-0 on aggregate, with the obvious threat posed by Mbappe and Lionel Messi contained with minimal fuss.
WHAT THEY SAID: Coman told Telefoot when asked if specific tactical systems had been drawn up for PSG’s collection of World Cup-winning forwards: “There was no big anti- Mbappe plan. The most important thing was to break up with Lionel Messi. We are also a team that pushes very hard. But we also went back down to leave it a little shallower.”
THE BIG PICTURE: Coman scored the only goal of the game against his former club as Bayern took a 1-0 lead over PSG at Parc des Princes, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry completing the scoring at the Allianz Arena.
Mbappe and Messi will have to wait at least a year for another shot at Champions League glory, while Bayern will find out who their quarter-final opponents will be when the draw for the last eight is made on Friday.
