Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick has confirmed that Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien is undergoing his rehabilitation from surgery with the Championship side instead of returning to his parent club.
The 25-year-old joined ‘Boro on loan until the end of the season in the summer transfer window. He impressed in his first five appearances for the club where he played at both defensive midfield and left-back.
O’Brien is now doing his rehabilitation with Middlesbrough, who will manage his recovery. The decision to let him stay with his loan club indicates that he could return to action before the end of the season.
Carrick has now given the latest on the player’s progress, although the ‘Boro boss refused to put a timeline on his return.
“He’s OK. He’s going through his rehab so he’s still a good number of weeks away, but he’s making good progress and he’s in and around us here and working his way back. There’s a group of them [in the treatment room],” Carrick told TeesideLive.
I’m not putting a timeframe on that. He’s been out for a number of weeks and will be out for a good few more weeks. I don’t want to give you dates, otherwise you’ll be asking me, ‘Is he fit?’ I’m not going down that road just yet.”
O’Brien moved to Forest in the summer of 2022 but was unable to nail down a regular starting spot. He signed a loan deal with MLS side DC United in March, after a move to Blackburn Rovers fell through in January.
The midfielder returned to Forest in the summer but completed another loan move away from the club. He moved to Middlesbrough temporarily in the last few days of the transfer window.
