Newcastle United 95% close to sign £58m super star in few days

Newcastle United have not been able to call upon Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock for a while now but the pair are making progress with their recoveries

Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock are stepping up their recoveries to hand Newcastle United a much-needed boost.

Barnes has not played for Newcastle since suffering a freak foot injury in the 8-0 demolition of Sheffield United back in September while Willock has been sidelined with a recurrence of an achilles issue for two-and-a-half months now. Barnes had been back kicking balls on the grass earlier this month, but the winger had not returned to group training before the winter break. Willock, who was further behind, had not been running as the midfielder was building up the strength in his achilles.

However, the £58m pair have since taken another step forward in their respective rehabs. Barnes posted a photograph of his boots with the fully charged battery emoji while Willock also took a picture of his with the caption: ‘Step by step’.

Newcastle are keen not to rush Barnes and Willock back, but their absences have been factored into the club’s transfer plans this month with the Magpies hopeful of having a much stronger bench in the weeks to come. Callum Wilson (calf) and Jacob Murphy (shoulder) are also edging closer to a return, while Matt Targett has been back on the bike, but Elliot Anderson looks set for another few weeks on the sidelines after suffering a stress fracture in his back last October. Nick Pope (shoulder) and Joelinton (thigh) are the club’s longer term absentees
