NFL insider predicts big contract extension for Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff
The Detroit Lions, who were one game away from making the Super Bowl last season, found a new culture under head coach Dan Campbell.
The Lions won the NFC North for the first time since redistricting in 2002, advancing to the NFC Championship after a 30-year drought. Detroit has transformed its franchise under Campbell, but another reason for Detroit’s success is quarterback Jared Goff.
He was traded to the Los Angeles Rams for cornerback Matthew Stafford. Jared Goff threw for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns in the 2023-24 season.
Goff completed 66.7% of his passes during the regular season, throwing for 4,575 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, earning him his third Pro Bowl nomination in 2023. By leading Detroit to 27.4 points per game offensively, Goff took a step forward from last season and proved he can lead his team to multiple playoff wins.
Goff, who is in the final year of his current contract, will make $21.7 million next season if his contract is not renewed. However, the two sides are in talks and hope to reach an agreement in the future. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, there’s a good chance Detroit will pay him as a top defensive player.
“I think there’s a pretty good chance that Jared Goff could get $40 million to $45 million,” he said. I mean, Jared Goff played exceptional football for the Lions last year and the year before. He proved to be a much better person than people, including myself, thought. ”
If Goff and the Lions do not reach an agreement on a contract extension this season, the Lions will receive an additional $10 million.
While a contract extension for Goff could improve the rest of the team for next season, general manager Brad Holmes told reporters that Goff’s contract is not a priority when it comes to ongoing decisions. He said no.
