Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian’s ridiculous buyout numbers announced
The Texas Longhorns head coach received an extension after leading the Longhorns to a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian signed a contract extension after the Texas Longhorns had their best season since 2009. The deal was slow anyway, but Nick Saban’s departure and Alabama scouting around Austin to see if Sarkisian wanted to return certainly helped speed up the process.
The Longhorns’ head coach is currently under contract through 2030 and is one of the highest-paid head coaches currently, earning more than $10 million annually. In addition to the big paycheck, he will also receive access to a private jet and a $300,000 bonus until April 1st.
While Texans fans hope Sarkisian never has to be waived, we also recently learned how much money he’s being bought out each year. According to a report from Inside Texas’ Joe Cook, if the Longhorns wanted to move on from Sarkisian at any time, it would be an expensive move. For example, if Texas were to part ways with Sarkisian next season, he would be owed $54,315,000.
Prices are going down every year, but again these are just details tailored to his contract. If Texas were to have to pay any of these fees, it would certainly be a major blow to a program that has reached some of the highest fees in more than a decade.
Sarkisian turned down the opportunity to return to Alabama, but plans to return to the SEC in 2024. The Longhorns are scheduled to debut as members of the SEC next season alongside Oklahoma, and the Longhorns still have a lot of work to do. On the other hand, they brought back one of the best running backs in college football, strengthened their receiving corps, and added some talent on defense to strengthen their unit.
