Fans celebrate Aston Villa Women breathe sigh of relief despite 4-0 Continental Cup

Aston Villa Women breathed a sigh of relief despite losing 4-0 to Arsenal in the Continental Cup.

Aston Villa Women were eliminated from the Continental Cup against Arsenal on Wednesday 6th March.

It was a complete rout for the north London side as the hosts defeated Carla Ward’s side 4-0, with Stina Blackstenias stealing the show with a hat-trick. Frieda Mahnum also scored for the home side, with all four goals coming before the half-time whistle at Meadow Park.

It was a great night for Arsenal, but a very disappointing night for the Midlands club. However, there was a glimmer of hope for the Midlands club after the defeat. Withdrawing from the Continental Cup means Ward and her players can now focus their efforts on the Women’s Super League (WSL) campaign.

The Midlands side currently sit eighth in the table and have won only five of their 15 games so far. This allows everyone involved to breathe a sigh of relief and move forward strongly towards the good league results that the team has lacked so far this season.

They have a great chance to bounce back next Saturday (March 16) as they face fellow club rivals Everton. Their next match is against the 10th-placed Merseyside club, with third-placed Arsenal traveling to the Midlands shortly after.

Manager Ward is likely to give up a relatively high ranking this season, so he will need to do everything he can to stay as far away from the bottom of the table as possible.
