DONE DEAL🚨🟢 Plymouth Argyle finally appoint Wayne Rooney as new head coach

Three year contract for Rooney to be signed over the weekend, as first called

Wayne Rooney is set to return to management with Plymouth Argyle, with the Championship club set to confirm his appointment as head coach on Saturday, according to reports.

Plymouth Argyle are expected to announce the appointment of Wayne Rooney as their new head coach on Saturday following successful negotiations with the former England striker, The Athletic reports. Rooney, 38, has been out of management since his dismissal from Birmingham City after a brief and unsuccessful 83-day stint at the Championship club.

It is expected that the former Manchester United and England forward will be taking over from Ian Foster, who was sacked in April after less than three months in charge of the Pilgrims. Neil Dewsnip, Argyle’s director of football, led the search for Foster’s successor at Home Park and has a previous connection with Rooney from his time at Everton’s academy.

Birmingham were sitting sixth in the Championship when Rooney took over, but a disappointing run of two victories and nine losses in 15 games led to his sacking, leaving the Midlands club just six points clear of relegation. Birmingham were subsequently relegated to League One on the final day of the 2023-24 season, with Argyle surviving by just a single point.

Since parting ways with Birmingham, Rooney has primarily worked as a pundit, appearing on Sky, TNT Sports and BBC Sport. It was recently announced that he will be part of the BBC’s live coverage of this summer’s European Championship in Germany.
