Newcastle United still keeping eagle eyes on Lucas Chevalier as Lille set to release player

According to Corriere dello Sport, Newcastle United, and Fulham are interested in Lucas Chevalier. After an impressive season between the sticks in Ligue 1, the 21-year-old French goalkeeper has seen his stock rise at Lille.

LOSC Lille lost a great player in Mike Maignan to AC Milan, who helped the Rossoneri win Serie A in his first season. In the background, the Ligue 1 club has another rising star in Lucas Chevalier, who was on loan to Valenciennes last season.

He returned to Lille in the summer and was named their No. 1 after six games. Since then, the 21-year-old French goalkeeper has not put a foot wrong, establishing himself as one of the top stars in his position. Chevalier has cemented his place on the team and continues to perform admirably.

Chevalier continues to perform at the highest level and hopes to one day make the French national team. Meanwhile, a move to the Premier League is still on the table, with at least two major clubs interested in signing him.

Newcastle United and Fulham are keen on the 21-year-old French goalkeeper. However, both clubs are vying for a backup at this point, considering the summer arrivals at both sides have locked the No.1 spot. The Magpies, in particular, have been looking for a deputy in January and had to recall Martin Dubravka from his loan at Manchester United.

Illan Meslier was previously linked, according to reports. However, due to his status, the Leeds United star will most likely move on to a team where he is the first choice. That could be the case with Chevalier, who may only join a club where he is the starting quarterback.

Eddie Howe will almost certainly press Newcastle United to make a bid. However, Chevalier believes that they will not bench Pope anytime soon. Instead, they may continue to look for a replacement for the England international.

Meanwhile, Marco Silva is looking for a replacement for Bernd Leno. Many players may be enticed to join Fulham as the Cottagers rise in the Premier League. They are on track to play in Europe next season. As a result, players like Chevalier may be interested in joining them.

Mads Hermansen is one of their targets who could become a household name. Pursuing Chevalier may bring hope. And the player could compete with Leno for a starting spot.

Hence, approaching him may appeal to Fulham as they continue to build their squad to the optimal levels. The 21-year-old French goalkeeper will strengthen the side. However, Lille would demand a considerable amount considering the keeper still has a contract until 2027.
