Eddie Howe advised Newcastle United to make huge summer move for Arsenal’s defender

According to The Sun, Newcastle United is interested in signing Arsenal full-back Tierney this summer. The Magpies are said to be hoping to sign the Scottish player during the summer transfer window.

Tierney’s Sporadic Role This Season in North London

Tierney has been an important member of Mikel Arteta’s squad this season, contributing to a few good performances for Arsenal on the left flank. The Scottish left-back has scored once and provided one assist in 25 appearances for the Gunners this season across various competitions.

The 25-year-old has made the majority of his Premier League appearances off the bench, which explains why he only averages 0.6 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, and 0.8 clearances per game. He has, however, distributed the ball relatively well, completing 76.7% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).

Tierney’s current contract at the Emirates Stadium expires in the summer of 2026. As a result, Newcastle may struggle to sign him on the cheap at the end of the season.

Tierney is a good ball defender who can make a few timely interceptions for his team on the defensive end of the field. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when necessary and is a capable crosser. Tierney is primarily a left-back, but he can also play as a central defender or a left-sided wide player if necessary. He must, however, improve his consistency on the left flank.

Newcastle would benefit greatly from someone with the Scotsman’s skill set as they look to compete on all fronts in the coming seasons. Tierney is expected to add depth to Eddie Howe’s match-day squad and help the Tyneside club compete for major honours in the future. He is well-versed in the Premier League and will adjust quickly to life at Newcastle.

The Douglas-born talent has been sporadic for Arsenal recently, often finding himself behind Oleksandr Zinchenko in Mikel Arteta‘s pecking order. Despite Dan Burn’s recent performances as a makeshift left-back, Howe has the luxury of giving him a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park.
