Newcastle United goal hero Dan Burn sends ‘this year we want a cup’ message

The Magpies defender scored his first goal for the club in the 2-0 Carabao Cup quarter-final win over Leicester City

Dan Burn acknowledged that scoring at St James’ Park was a dream come true. The huge Geordie scored on the hour to help settle an enthralling League Cup quarter-final in front of a raucous crowd.

And he made his way over to them to celebrate after breaking the deadlock in a 2-0 win.

“I used to sit in the East Stand, you always want to score in front of the Gallowgate end, to accomplish that in front of my family was great,” Burn said after the game. I prefer to take the initiative, and it’s fascinating to see a guy my size run into the box.

“There was a lot of enthusiasm before the game. The coach made a great deal about striving for a trophy this season; in prior years, remaining in the league was sufficient, but this year we want a cup.

“The fans deserve it, and we intend to deliver. When I initially arrived here, I thought it may be quite down, as it has been at other teams in relegation battles, but we’ve brought in a terrific collection of lads who all complement each other.

“Sometimes you become used to winning, and the loss the other day was just what we needed.”
