Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has aimed a brutal dig at UEFA following the controversial 1-1 draw at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.
The Magpies were seconds away from claiming a historic win at the Parc des Princes following Alexander Isak’s 24th-minute opener until the hosts were awarded a penalty in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
A cross from Ousmane Dembele hit the chest of Tino Livramento before hitting the top part of his arm. Referee Szymon Marciniak initially waved away PSG’s appeals, however, VAR officials instructed the Polish official to review the decision at the pitchside monitor.
Marciniak then pointed to the spot and Kylian Mbappe converted to deny Newcastle a famous win in Paris, one that would have moved them up to second in Group F ahead of final matchday at home to AC Milan.
A number of pundits, including Magpies legend Alan Shearer, branded the decision as “disgusting”. A lot of reaction has come from social media and the PR team at Specsavers saw an opportunity to strike.
Responding to the UEFA Champions League’s full-time post on X, Specsavers, in reference to the penalty decision, said: “Are you free for a long and serious chat?”
And the reply provoked a response from Ghodoussi, who said: “Can you make them an appointment pls”.
Ghodoussi then went on to say: “I’m lost for words. So proud of our boys….they once again gave everything on that pitch. These boys are special @nufc #nufc @ChampionsLeague
“To our away supporters, thank you and stay safe tonight – get home safely.”
The late goal means Newcastle’s hopes of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League are out of their hands.
