BREAKING NEWS: Wigan Athletic finally leading Portsmouth and Ipswich Town in 22-goal ace chase

Wigan Athletic have joined the race for Altrincham attacker Chris Conn-Clarke, according to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon.

Wigan Athletic have become the latest Football League side to be linked with a swoop for the National League hotshot. They are preparing for another season in League One under the guidance of Shaun Maloney.

Conn-Clarke, 22, appears to be a man in-demand heading into the upcoming transfer window and his current club could face a battle to keep hold of him. As per FootballTransfers, he is on the radar of Ipswich Town, Portsmouth, Peterborough United and Mansfield Town.

In this latest update regarding his future by journalist Nixon on Patreon, the Latics have entered the chase for his signature as they look to bolster their attacking ranks over the next couple of months. They finished 12th in the table in this past campaign and were 14 points off the play-offs.

Wigan Athletic eye attacker

Wigan Athletic could see Conn-Clarke as someone to inject more quality into their attacking ranks.

The former Northern Ireland youth international scored 22 goals in all competitions last term for Altrincham and helped them reach the play-offs. However, they lost out at the semi-final stage to eventual winners Bromley.

He started his career with spells as a youngster at Linfield and Glentoran before Burnley lured him over to England in 2018.

Conn-Clarke spent three years on the books at Turf Moor but didn’t play for the first-team of the Clarets. Instead, he was loaned out to Chorley in the National League North to get some experience under his belt before heading out the exit door on a permanent basis.

Fleetwood Town snapped him up and he played five games for the Cod Army during his time there. He was shipped out to Waterford to get some game time before initially linking up with Altrincham on a temporary basis.

The North West outfit then snapped him up permanently last summer and he hasn’t looked back since.

Wigan Athletic eye move

Conn-Clarke would be an eye-catching addition for Wigan Athletic if they were to sign him.

He wouldn’t have to move far if he ended up switching to the DW Stadium and he would probably get more minutes with Maloney’s men as opposed to going to a team in the Championship like Portsmouth.

Other teams like Ipswich Town, Peterborough United and Mansfield Town have also been mentioned which suggests there will be competition in this particular pursuit.
