Coach brooks gets his first commitment as kentucky head coach…..

Kentucky makes decision on John Calipari’s future as basketball coach John Calipari isn’t done in Lexington.

Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart confirmed Tuesday that the Hall of Fame basketball coach would return to Kentucky for a 16th season in 2024-25.

The confirmation comes after days of speculation that the Wildcats shocking NCAA Tournament loss to Oakland would be his final game at the school.

Barnhart said the decision to retain Calipari was made after annual “conversations about the direction of our men’s basketball program.”

talent, but on-court results have been lacking compared to the program’s lofty standards in recent years.

Big Blue lost in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament and was shocked by 15-seed St. Peter’s in the first round of the 2022 tournament. Kentucky failed to make the tournament in 2021.

It reached the Elite Eight in 2019, but Kentucky hasn’t made a Final Four since back-to-back appearances in 2014 and 2015. The Wildcats won a national title in 2012.

But those accomplishments have faded in a state where Kentucky basketball is king and elite success is expected every single season. Calls from the fanbase and media for his removal were extremely loud following the team’s latest shortcoming in the NCAA Tournament.

Some, such as fellow HOF coach-turned CBS analyst Jay Wright, have gone as far as to question Calipari’s one-and-done approach to team building.

The former Villanova coach had this to say following Kentucky’s loss to Greg Kampe and Oakland:

“The era of taking these young freshmen and trying to play against older players is over,” Wright said. “I think he did a phenomenal job with these guys all year, getting to be as successful as they were. You can see they’re playing against grown men. The guys on Kentucky will be far better pros than any of these guys on Oakland or any of these guys in the tournament, but they’re not as good college basketball players. “At this point in their careers, they’re not as disciplined yet as the guys from Oakland.”

“It’s not Cal’s fault; it’s their 18-year-olds. And they’re in this era where everyone’s telling them how great they are. Just show up in college, and you’re going to win. It doesn’t happen that way. And the more the guys stay in college because NIL, is going to be tougher for young teams like this to be successful.”

Calipari’s contract has a buyout of $33 million. Barnhart didn’t say if that played a factor in his decision to retain the 65-year-old coach.

Kentucky is set to bring in another highly ranked class in 2024 including four five-star recruits. Center Jayden Quaintance and guard Boogie Fland have already signed with the Wildcats, while forwards Karter Knox and Billy Richmond are verbally committed.

Calipari is 410-122 in 15 seasons at Kentucky. He has not won the SEC since 2019-20.
