Latest Derby County news from DerbyshireLive brings you what is being said about Conor Hourihane moving to Oakwell

Conor Hourihane’s move to Barnsley is reportedly “moving closer” as the Tykes hope to secure an emotional return for the former Derby County captain.

The Tykes appointed Darrell Clarke as manager following his exit from Cheltenham last week as they plan for another season in League One after losing in the play-offs to Bolton. And according to the Barnsley Chronicle, talks with Hourihane are ongoing as they look to seal a move for the ex-Derby skipper who was one of six players to be released after the club won promotion.

Hourihane is eager to make the next step into coaching having studied for his badges while at Derby while also taking sessions with Aston Villa’s under-16s.

Conor Hourihane says Derby County have to "stand up" more to sides who are physical.

A player/coach role at Barnsley has been mooted and it is said that a deal for the 33-year-old could be wrapped up for Hourihane this week. That would seal a glorious return to the club where he won the EFL Trophy and promotion to the Championship before sealing a move to Villa in 2017.

After news of his departure from Derby was confirmed, Hourihane said: “Two incredible years with the Rams has come to an end. From the first goal v Oxford to finishing off with League One promotion.

“Captaining the club to the Championship was a big honour for me. Getting promotion was my aim when I signed and finishing on that note seems right. I wish the club nothing but the best moving into next season and hope it can keep moving forward in the right direction. Thank you Rams.”

Hourihane made a vital contribution to Derby’s promotion success last season having hit a crucial winner in a 3-2 win against Burton Albion at Pride Park. He made 47 appearances last season, scoring six goals.
