GOOD BYE: Cheltenham Town are poised to sign Ryan Haynes following his exit from Northampton Town

Cheltenham Town are poised to sign Ryan Haynes following his exit from Northampton Town, according to reporter Pete O’Rourke on X.

Cheltenham Town are set to snap up the left-back on a free transfer following their relegation to League Two. They slipped out of League One after finishing in the bottom three along with Carlisle United, Fleetwood Town and Port Vale.

Haynes, 28, officially sees his contract at Northampton Town expire at the end of the month and is becoming available as a free agent. The Cobblers made the decision not to extend his stay at Sixfields beyond the past season.

In this latest update regarding his situation, journalist O’Rourke has reported on X that he is expected to link up with the Robins as they prepare for life in the fourth tier. They have turned to former Newport County, Walsall and Swindon Town man Michael Flynn as their new manager after Darrell Clarke’s exit to Barnsley.

Haynes will give Cheltenham Town more competition and depth in defence as they look to bounce back with promotion in the next campaign.

He started his career at Coventry City and rose up through the academy ranks of the Sky Blues.

The full-back was a regular at various different youth levels before going on to make 97 appearances for them in all competitions, chipping in with five goals from defence. He also had a loan spell away at Cambridge United to get some experience under his belt

Haynes then left on a permanent basis in 2018 and played for Shrewsbury Town and Newport County.

The Northampton-born man was then signed by his local team in 2022 and helped Northampton Town go up last year under Jon Brady.

They then made a decent account of themselves in the third tier last term but have decided to cut ties with Haynes.

What next?

His exit frees up space and funds in the Cobblers’ ranks to bring in other players over the next couple of months.

Haynes wasn’t the only player to leave Northampton Town. They also released Peter Abimbola, Dominic Gape, Danny Hylton and Liam Moore.

Kieron Bowie, Marc Leonard, Louie Moulden, Tyreece Simpson and Tony Springett all also went back to their parent clubs following their respective loans.

The Cobblers have a few vacancies to fill in their squad now and have the chance to bring in reinforcements when the transfer window opens for business.
