Curry returns from injury, Warriors beat Lakers
Steph Curry, returning from an ankle sprain, scored 31 points, backup Klay Thompson added 26 points, and the Golden State Warriors defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 128-121 in NBA action on Saturday.
The Lakers lost forward AMthony Davis to a shot in the left eye after the first quarter, wasting LeBron James’ 40-point performance against the Warriors. “It’s a big win for us,” Curry said. “I don’t know the last time we beat them here. It’s a big deal.
Curry, the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, will miss Golden State’s remaining three games, and without him the Warriors are just 1-5 on the season.
The 36-year-old guard and four-time NBA champion made a spectacular comeback, making 12-of-24 shots from the floor and 3-of-10 from 3-point range, with six rebounds and five assists. James, who made 15 of 23 shots, had eight points and nine assists, replacing Davis, who went to the locker room after the first quarter and did not play again.
“They’ll always talk about me and him,” Curry said of James. “Tonight was for our whole group. It takes the whole team to win, and we needed it, and we really needed it.
Draymond Green had 12 rebounds and 13 assists and Jonathan Kuminga added 23 points for the Golden State Warriors. Near the end of the game, play was halted for several minutes due to a shot clock malfunction.
“I have never seen anything like this in my career. They usually have backup time or something like that,” Curry said.
“That’s the worst thing that can happen, especially at this age. You build everything before the match and start the match, but once the engine stops, it’s difficult to start it again.
Jaylen Williams had 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat Memphis 118-112 to take first place in the Western Conference.
The Thunder tied defending NBA champion Denver 47-20 for the top spot in the West. For Oklahoma City, rookie Chet Holmgren had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 20 points.
“I just had to keep winning,” Holmgren said. “Things didn’t go our way throughout the game, but we did enough to get the win.”
For Minnesota, Anthony Edwards scored 31 points and Mike Conley added 25 points as the Timberwolves advanced to take on the West Division leaders with a 119-100 win at Utah.
Jalen Brunson scored 42 points and led the New York Knicks to a 98-91 victory over Sacramento. Tyrese Maxey scored 30 points and the Philadelphia 76ers defeated Charlotte 109-98.
Cameroonian forward Pascal Siakam had 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead Indiana University to a 121-100 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. C.J. McCollum had 30 points and eight assists, Zion Williamson had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and New Orleans defeated Portland 126-107.
Jaylen Green had 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Houston defeated Cleveland 117-103, extending the Rockets’ winning streak to five games. Ayo Dosunmu scored 34 points, Nikola Vucevic added 29 points and 13 rebounds, and the Chicago Bulls beat Washington 127-98 in the NBA.
