Despite earning the 2023 Sixth Man of the Year award, the Boston Celtics attempted to move Malcolm Brogdon at the outset of the offseason.
Brogdon has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career. When healthy, the veteran guard is one of the NBA’s most versatile ball-handlers. Nonetheless, teams are clearly hesitant to trade for a guard who was injured again during the Celtics’ journey to the Eastern Conference Finals.
After failing to move Brogdon this summer, the Celtics are anticipated to have the veteran guard as their sixth man for the second year in a row. Brogdon is in the first year of a two-year, $45 million contract extension and is available to negotiate another extension between October 1 and the day before the new season begins.
However, according to HoopsHype’s Yossi Gozlan, Brogdon’s current contract extension seems improbable, as Boston is likely eager to keep their experienced guard tradeable.
“Malcolm Brogdon had a strong season with the Celtics, but they will probably hold off on an extension to keep him trade-eligible,” Gozlan writes. “An extension now seems extremely unlikely after they agreed to trade him to the Clippers in a deal that fell through.”

During his debut season with the Celtics, Brogdon appeared in 67 regular-season games, averaging 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting 48.4% from the field and 44.4% from 3-point range.
