Celtics have offered a deal to a former Lakers draft selection

After dismissing Justin Champagne on Tuesday, the Celtics are still looking to add to their 15-man roster. According to a new rumor, the Boston Bruins are exploring adding an experienced shooter on the wing to help fill out their depth chart.

Boston has offered Svi Mykhailiuk a contract for the 2023-24 season, according to Greek publication Sports DNA. According to the article, the 26-year-old is also considering abroad offers, including a move to Panathinaikos.

Mykhailiuk split his time last season with the Hornets and Knicks and has bounced around the NBA since being drafted by the Lakers in 2018. At 6-foot-7, he provides some good size at the wing and he played well with the Hornets during the final two months of last year, averaging 10.6 points while shooting 40.4 percent from 3-point range.

Mykhailiuk’s 3-point shooting percentage for his career (36 percent) has been middle of the road, which has led to him playing for six different teams since 2018 since he offers little on the defensive end. However, with Joe Mazzulla’s emphasis on 3-point shooting rate, Mykhailiuk would fill the bill on that front as 63 percent of his field goal attempts in the NBA have come beyond the arc.

Brad Stevens hinted last month the team is still looking to add to the roster even before the team opened up another roster spot this week.

“I think we’ll try to add obviously a little bit,” Stevens said during Summer League. “I’d like to get a little more depth, maybe on the wing, and then also maybe with a 4/3 type. I feel pretty good about our bigs. We’ve got a couple two ways, so we’ve got some things we’re still very much looking at.”

Boston has two vacant roster spots and two non-guaranteed contracts on its 15-man roster, meaning the team still has plenty of roster flexibility to add to go along with one available roster space. Boston obtained two second-round picks and a $6.2 million trade exception in return for dealing restricted free agent Grant Williams to the Mavericks last month. The team’s current guards are Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Malcolm Brogdon, and Payton Pritchard.

“We’re obviously in a unique position where, when we traded, we weren’t going to take much back,” Stevens said of the Williams transaction. “But I do think it’ll be a good opportunity for him, and it gives us some flexibility here as we move forward.”
