Rangers are unlikely to renew their pursuit of Swansea City’s Morgan Whittaker this summer, despite renewed interest from Coventry City.
The Scottish giants have long admired the 22-year-old, but have shown little sign that they are serious about renewing their interest, and there are now genuine concerns about whether they will return to the fold.
After being turned down many times in the January window, the Scottish giants were expected to come back with a fresh offer. However, the capture of Abdallah Sima on loan from Brighton may have dampened their enthusiasm.
A transfer to Ibrox isn’t completely ruled out, but a new approach this summer is deemed improbable at the moment.
In the meantime, WalesOnline understands Whittaker has surfaced on the radar of Championship rivals Coventry, albeit they have yet to make a formal offer at this level.
Coventry appear to be resigned to losing top striker and former Swan Viktor Gyokeres in this transfer window, amid reports of a big-money move to Sporting Lisbon. His departure could hasten their interest in Whittaker, though it appears doubtful that he will be brought in as a like-for-like replacement.
Plymouth are also great supporters of Whittaker, who scored nine goals for the Pilgrims during a successful loan stay last season. However, there are still questions about whether they have the financial power to close a deal.
Sunderland has also been mentioned, but they are not regarded as a major contender at this time.
Whittaker is now in Spain with the rest of the Swans group for a warm weather training camp.
Despite the possibility of a new chapter under new manager Michael Duff, his future at the club remains unknown.
