Former Player advice Boston Celtics to Go After Unsigned Centers

The Boston Celtics made another big splash in the offseason by wasting no time to acquire Jrue Holiday from the Portland Trail Blazers.

They found a perfect replacement for Marcus Smart and his tough and pesky backcourt defense, and while he may not be as vocal a leader as Smart, he could still give them a lot of what they lost to get Kristaps Porzingis.

However, they did lose another key piece in Robert Williams III to get Holiday, which is why former NBA champion Matt Barnes believes they should dig deep into the free agent market.

Per Barnes, they should try and give Dwight Howard and/or DeMarcus Cousins a call.

Barnes has often advocated for veterans and believes every team should have a couple of them to teach the young guys the ropes of the NBA lifestyle.

Both Cousins and Howard had been playing overseas in Puerto Rico and Taiwan, respectively, and they’ve been more than vocal about their desire to get back to the league.

Cousins gave the Denver Nuggets some solid minutes off the bench two years ago, and it looked like he could still have a role in the NBA.

Perhaps his reputation as a tough-minded and strong character has driven some teams away, which is similar to what happens with Howard.

Howard is definitely past his prime and is no longer the lockdown defender he once was, but he could still play some solid minutes off the bench, and the Celtics couldn’t go wrong with either of them.
