CLEVELAND, OH — The Browns sent Josh Dobbs to Arizona because they trusted Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR) as their backup quarterback.
That occurred during the preseason. Deshaun Watson was in good health. DTR had a terrific preseason and training camp.
Following the Dobbs trade, GM Andrew Berry believed he might add a veteran quarterback who had been released by another club. He did the same thing with P.J. Walker.
The Browns believed Watson’s rotator cuff issues were resolved as the midseason trade deadline approached on Oct. 31.
They also had faith in DTR.
Then came Wednesday’s news of Watson sustaining a major shoulder injury in the 33-31 victory over Baltimore. He will require season-ending surgery.
Given how Dobbs has played for Arizona and then Minnesota, it would be great to have him on the roster. It was a bit odd that Berry traded Dobbs, because the GM usually prized good backup QBs. He had veteran Case Keenum in his first two seasons and Jacoby Brissett last season.
I was hoping he’d trade for Brissett or another top backup QB at the trading deadline. I heard the price Washington wanted for Brissett was a third-round pick.
No deal was made.
That’s the background of how the Browns ended up with DTR starting Sunday’s game vs. Pittsburgh in place of Watson.
