The transfer window gossip columns and so-called ITK social media accounts are awash with speculation at this time of year, ranging from believable snippets that just might have a bit of substance to the far fetched and downright spurious.
Whatever next? Well, I’ll tell you what. Predicted transfer moves from AI, that’s what!
Yep, that’s right, you heard me, Artificial Intelligence is getting in on the act, with BettingSites.co.uk using AI software to predict the biggest transfers in the Championship this summer.
It’s something to clearly be taken with a large pinch of salt and in no way too seriously. And with that in mind, just for a bit of fun, here’s what they’ve come up with for Coventry City.
The headline transfer is Ellis Simms going to Brentford as Ivan Toney’s replacement for £16million, which, to be fair, wouldn’t be a bad return on City’s initial £3.5m investment from Everton just 12 months ago.
However, while it also claims that Ben Sheaf could move on – which is not beyond the realms of possibility given the early reported interest in the former Arsenal prospect – a desperately low transfer fee of just £3m is predicted for a move to Premier League side Crystal Palace. A minimum of £10m, and probably nearer to £15m, however, would be more realistic.
According to the study (and let’s not forget, this is AI generated and no-one for a second is saying that there is any real substance in this) there could be an exciting addition to Mark Robins’ squad with the prediction that City will sign Cameron Archer for £6m, presumably funded by Simms’ big money move back to the Premier League.
Remember, we’re completely in the realms of fantasy here.
That being said, there was one transfer prediction that got City fans talking on an otherwise quiet weekend in terms of transfer tittle-tattle, with the claim that the Sky Blues could be interested in taking Middlesbrough’s Paddy McNair on a free transfer. And while there is nothing concrete to back this up – trust me, I have asked around – out of all the AI predictions, this one doesn’t seem a bad shout on paper.
Coventry supporters may recall he was outstanding up against Viktor Gyokeres in the play-off semi-final first leg clash at the CBS Arena alongside Darragh Lenihan last year, when the central defensive partnership put in arguably one of the best defensive displays by any against the big Swede that season.
The former Manchester United Academy graduate, now 29, has been let go by Michael Carrick at the end of what is understood to be a fairly hefty contract at The Riverside. He’s technically very good and, although right footed, is comfortable in either centre-back position in a back four as well as a three and is also versatile, able to play at right-back and in midfield.
