Coventry City beat Swansea City in race to sign Scottish Premiership ace

Coventry City have joined Swansea City in the race for Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron this summer, as detailed in a report by the Daily Record.

Coventry City are keen on luring the Scotsman down the border to the CBS Arena ahead of the 2024/25 season in the Championship. They finished 9th in this past campaign under the guidance of Mark Robins and also reached the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

Barron, 21, is out of contract at the end of next month and is yet to put pen-to-paper on an extension meaning he is due to become available as a free agent as things stand. He doesn’t appear to be short of suitors either as he weighs up his options.

As per the Daily Record, the Sky Blues are interested in landing him along with the Swans. Italian sides such as Bologna, Cagliari and Sassuolo have also been mentioned as potential suitors.

Coventry City could see Barron as someone to bolster their midfield department and he has a lot of potential.

The Scotland youth international would be a decent long-term option for the Sky Blues in the middle of the park as they look to eventually reach the Premier League. They made the play-off final last year but were beaten on penalties by Luton Town, who have now returned to the Football League after 12 months in the top flight.

Barron has been on the books at Aberdeen for his whole career to date and rose up through their academy ranks.

He was a regular for the Scottish Premiership outfit at various different youth levels before he was handed his first-team debut back in January 2022 in a Scottish Cup clash against Edinburgh City.

The Kintore-born man then had loan spells away at Brechin City and Kelty Hearts in the lower leagues to get some experience under his belt.

Barron then returned to his parent club and hasn’t looked back since. He has become one of their most prized assets and has made 73 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with two goals and four assists.

What next for Coventry City target?

Bologna could see the youngster as a key target following the success they have had with fellow Scottish player Lewis Ferguson recently.

However, Coventry City, along with Swansea City, would give him a chance to play in England and he would likely get quite a bit of game time with the pair if he was to move down the border.
