Coventry City transfer opinion from CoventryLive as Sky Blues reporter Andy Turner takes a look at how today would pan out in an ideal world
Coventry City have added seven new players to Mark Robins’ squad during a steady summer of transfer business, including the delayed arrival of Ephron Mason-Clark whose deal was done in the January window.
That comes to a combined tune of around £15m spent out, with the Sky Blues front loading the top end of the pitch with bags of pace, attacking flair and technical ability. In fact, five of the seven new recruits – Mason-Clark, Raphael, Jack Rudoni, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Norman Bassette – are forward-thinking players. And on paper, at least, it looks as though City are well blessed with plenty of options in the final third.
So what areas of the pitch are left to fill? The obvious positions that jump out are a new right-back to provide competition and back-up for Milan van Ewijk – City’s only recognised full-back on that side – and a really influential central midfielder. We know that the club have been in the market for a quality performer in the middle of the park following their pursuit of Marko Stamenic, who opted to join Nottingham Forest instead.
Rumours about AFC Bournemouth’s Philip Billing joining on loan swept through social media earlier in the week but always appeared fanciful, particularly given the 28-year-old’s wages and fact that the likes of Sheffield United, Leeds and Burnley – three teams that appear closer to a return to the Premier League than most – have been linked. It’s also unlikely that the player, who was handed his senior debut by Mark Robins at Huddersfield in 2014, would consider dropping down a division.
