Mark Robins says that his Coventry City players have set the “benchmark” for themselves after a hugely encouraging and much-needed bounce back performance against Blackburn Rovers.

John Eustace’s men pitched up at the CBS Arena unbeaten in the Championship and sitting pretty in third in the table but the Sky Blues got into them, got an early goal from Jake Bidwell and then added two more after the break from Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante to inflict Rovers first defeat of the season.

Asked if it was a much-needed win after two disappointing performances against Swansea and Leeds, the manager said: “It was to be fair. Much-needed, yeah, for confidence, belief, for the supporters but we played some really good football and we have not really got what we have deserved this season, apart from Saturday when we deserved nothing (at Leeds).

“And it was a bit of an anomaly really because if you have played so well in he previous week, you expect to try to build on that and it didn’t happen. And that can happen with young players, maybe lacking in self belief or whatever. But there was a difference in them yesterday. I just said to them, it was if that game hadn’t taken place on Saturday and they came in on Monday and were absolutely in the right place.

“So, just go with it. And then tonight we started off really well. The line was led by Brandon really well with Haji off the left and then obviously Tatsu’s injury meant that Ephron came on and he worked really hard on the right. We picked up some good positions in possession and I thought we were pretty good in the first half, really good.

“They have been good so far this season but I thought we were good value for the win. I think we had 18 shots but a lot of them were really good chances, good crosses into the box. They had quite a bit of the play, some good possession and a lot of the ball but they have some really good players.”

He added: “We needed to get a really big performance tonight and that’s what we saw, but we’re capable of that. Can we set that standard now? Can that be the benchmark and try to improve on that. We have seen it a number of times in pre-season and into the season, creating a number of chances and not taking them. We have taken three of those 18 tonight and they were all really good goals in their own right, so I am delighted for them because it gives them plenty of confidence going into Saturday when we want to back it up against a Sheffield Wednesday team who are also set up to press and work really hard.”
