Sheffield Wednesday have just broken one 29-year record in 2-1 win over Coventry City

Sheffield Wednesday have just broken one 29-year record after coming back from behind to beat Coventry City 2-1.

Following a rough patch of form that saw Sheffield Wednesday lose four games in the space of five matches, Danny Rohl’s men have now gone three games unbeaten.

The Owls were impressive 3-2 victors over West Brom last weekend and held Bristol City to a goalless draw in midweek before securing a last gasp win against Coventry City.

Wednesday went 1-0 down in the contest when Jack Rudoni’s effort from range crept into the far corner. Djeidi Gassama then gave Rohl’s men renewed hope on the stroke of half-time after his strike flew past Ben Wilson.

Supporters would have perhaps settled for a point but Shea Charles popped up with his first Sheffield Wednesday goal in the 93rd minute to seal all three points.

The win saw Wednesday move up to 15th in the Championship table and while breaking one club record in the process.

Sheffield Wednesday win at Coventry City for the first time in 29 years

Travelling to Coventry and the Ricoh Arena hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Wednesday in decades, with the Owls struggling to get the better of the Sky Blues.

Last season, for instance, epitomised their struggles as Sheffield Wednesday were beaten 4-1 in the FA Cup and 2-0 away from home in the league.

On Saturday afternoon, they would have perhaps felt that sinking feeling once more when Rudoni put the hosts in front.

However, their impressive comeback and Charles’ 93rd-minute winner saw them win away at Coventry for the first time since 1995, with Wednesday securing a 1-0 victory in the Premier League.

This achievement was pointed out by journalist Joe Crann, who labelled the moment as ‘fantastic’ considering the hectic fixture schedule and the current players out injured.

What can Sheffield Wednesday achieve in 2024/25

After pulling off a survival miracle last season, Opta – like many others – have predicted Sheffield Wednesday to finish mid table in the Championship.

Most supporters would snap your hand off for a mid-table finish right now, as it would show the club is stabilising in the second tier and moving in the right direction following years of turmoil.

With the squad Rohl has at his disposal, finishing middle of the park would be a solid season for the Owls however, there isn’t anything stopping them from making a charge for the play-offs.

It’s too early to say whether that is a possibility but considering how they performed against West Brom and Coventry, in particular, Wednesday showed their fight till the very end and scoring late is the hallmark of a successful team.

If Rohl somehow stays for the long term and continues building his project, a finish in the playoffs could happen sooner rather than later.
