David Artell felt the Mariners were ‘worthy winners’ after their 2-1 victory at the Eco-Power Stadium
David Artell said lessons were learned from previous meetings as Grimsby Town were able to beat Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.
In the previous two games against Rovers under Artell, the Mariners had lost by an aggregate score of 8-1, but the team that took to the pitch at the Eco-Power Stadium this weekend looked much more confident and assured in their play.
A seventh goal of the season for Justin Obikwu and an own goal set up by some individual brilliance from Jason Dadi Svanthorsson gave Town a two-goal advantage, with a late header from Rob Street not able to stop Artell’s side heading back down the M180 with three points.
The Grimsby boss believed the result was another chapter of progression for his team as they overcame a side that had made light work of them in previous matches.
He said: “If ever there was a story of failing and then failing better, this was it. A year ago, we got absolutely walloped by Doncaster. Earlier this season, on the back of two really long away trips and a horrific injury crisis, we failed against Doncaster but failed a bit better.
“Today, we end up on the right side of it. That’s the progression made, and it’s the progress we’ve got to keep making. Doncaster are a really good team. They’re up there for a reason. But we’ve come here, and I thought we were worthy winners.
