BREAKING NEWS: Towns young star makes honest Huddersfield Town admission after scrappy Stevenage win

Huddersfield Town recorded a 2-1 win at home to Stevenage

Josh Koroma registered his first goal of the season in Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 win over Stevenage

Huddersfield Town forward Josh Koroma insists his side “need to do better” following their below-par second-half performance against Stevenage.

The Terriers continued their winning start to the season on Saturday with a 2-1 victory at the John Smith’s Stadium. Koroma opened the scoring in the first half and Ben Wiles netted the second soon after half-time, while Harvey White struck a consolation for the visitors from the penalty spot deep into added time.

Despite his side claiming another victory to go alongside their wins against Peterborough United and Morecambe, Koroma insists his side are focused on making improvements following their second-half showing against Stevenage.

Reflecting on Saturday’s win, Koroma told HTTV: “I think first half we were very good, and then second half, after our second goal, we feel like we let them off the hook a little bit.

“Obviously credit to them, they changed something, and it obviously worked. They brought on subs, their subs were good. We’re being critical of ourselves, even though we won, we want to do better than that.

“I think the culture of the club’s changing. The gaffer’s come in there and had a pop at us even though we won. We know we need to do better, probably after 50-60 minutes, we let them off the hook, but a win’s a win at the end of the day.

“It’s spread very quickly (a winning mentality). I think you can see from pre-season, we lost one game all pre-season. We’ve taken it into this season and won our first three games, and you can see everyone came off the pitch disappointed and we’ve won. If you said that a year ago, you wouldn’t believe that would be the case. It’s definitely changing.”

Koroma opened his account for the season in the 26th minute of Saturday’s contest, with the forward heading home Lasse Sorensen’s cross from the edge of the six-yard box.

The 25-year-old has played as a striker so far this campaign, with Michael Duff having opted not to have wingers in his system to date, but the goalscorer has enjoyed being part of a side that have created lots of chances in their opening three matches.

“The gaffer’s been shouting at me all week saying I’ve got to get in the box more and need to score more tap-ins,” Koroma said. “Lasse obviously has put in a great ball, and I kind of closed my eyes and it hit my head.

“I think the way we’re playing this season so far, we’re getting more chances, the ball’s getting forward more, so I’m definitely enjoying it, taking it one game at a time.

“Obviously on Tuesday I probably should’ve had two or three, but I got my first goal of the season today in the league, so hopefully it continues.”

Duff reiterated Koroma’s positional point in his post-match interview, adding: “Josh needs to get in where you score. If you go to the training ground, we’ve got a V triangle in that area, he needs to spend more time in there.

“Statistically I think it’s 83 per cent of goals (are scored in that area), so the more time you hang around in there rather than hanging out wide (you’ve got a better chance to score).

“Everyone knows he likes to come in on his [right] foot, which is fine, but again that’s something we’ve talked to him about, in terms of upgrading his opportunity. He deserves credit for getting in there.”

The Terriers are next in action at home to Shrewsbury Town this weekend, where they will aim to register a fourth straight win to continue their strong start to the season.

“Obviously we’ve got another game on Saturday, we get a week’s rest this time instead of playing on Tuesday, so that should do the squad well, but couldn’t ask for a better start,” Koroma said.
