The Black Cats winger is one of the most sought after players in the Championship
Premier League new boys Ipswich Town have tabled an opening offer for Sunderland winger Jack Clarke, as first reported by the Times. The bid is understood to be in the region of £15m before various add-ons are inserted into the deal.
Chronicle Live understands it’s the highest bid Sunderland have received to date for their talismanic winger, but the offer is still likely to fall short of the Black Cats’ asking price. The Wearsiders have already turned down offers from the Tractorboys and Southampton earlier this summer, but the latest offer is a statement of intent from Kieran McKenna’s side.
Clarke has been the subject of interest throughout the past 18 months due to his stellar form in red and white. Although the winger is happy at the Stadium of Light, the general consensus on Wearside is that he’s earned his move to the Premier League.
It would be a major blow for Regis Le Bris should they lose their talisman before the transfer deadline closes after fending off interest from various clubs. The Wearsiders rejected bids from Burnley last summer and the advances of Lazio in the recent January transfer window.
The Serie A side had an approach rejected outright over the course of the winter, with Sunderland said to be holding out for an offer closer to the £25m mark. None of those offers are believed to have been near the recent offer from the Tractorboys.
McKenna’s side have shown serious ambition since winning promotion back to the top flight and are close to agreeing a deal for Chelsea’s Armando Broja, which could be worth around £30m if they retain their place in the Premier League, taking their spend in the current window close to the £100m mark.
No deal has yet been agreed with the Black Cats for Clarke and a number of other clubs have a long-standing interest in the 23-year-old, with Southampton also keen on his services. Former club Leeds United are also fans of the winger, but have recently agreed a deal for Almeria winger Largie Ramazani which could impact any Clarke pursuit.
Tottenham Hotspur are also set for a financial windfall from any Clarke departure, having inserted a significant sell-on fee as part of his move to the Stadium of Light, previously reported to be 25 per cent.
