Ipswich fans mocked West Ham United with the “football in a library chant” while their game on 5 October was still 1-1.
The game ended up finishing 4-1 to the Hammers and allowed the home side to end their five-game winless streak.
Julen Lopetegui’s men now find themselves 12th in the Premier League table, five points clear from the relegation zone.
Michael Emons was covering the game at the London Stadium for the BBC on 5 October and shared his thoughts on the atmosphere of the game while it was still 1-1.
“A very strange atmosphere at London Stadium,” he wrote.
“Apart from West Ham’s first-minute goal, there has been little noise from the home fans, with most of the singing coming from the away fans.
“The ‘football in a library’ chant has been given a few outings from the Ipswich sections, but to be fair the Hammers supporters have not had too much to be excited about since Ipswich’s equaliser”.
West Ham United to capitalise on Ipswich win
The Hammers have been in a bit of a rut since the start of the season with the team performing well below-par.
Their 4-1 victory against Kieran McKenna’s men is no doubt a sign that better things are still to come but it feels as if this is how the Hammers should have been performing throughout the entirety of the season.
Lopetegui’s future has been under some major scrutiny lately but it seems that his future is secure for now as the West Ham board have given the Spaniard their “full support” [The Athletic, 5 October].
The manager’s decision-making has also been a hot topic recently, especially since he named an unchanged team for the clash against the Tractor Boys and chose Michail Antonio to lead his line.
However, it seems as if his choices have finally worked out and the Hammers will no doubt want to build on the momentum that they’ve gained from the win and take it into their future fixtures.
While West Ham still aren’t 100 per cent out of the woods in terms of performances, there’s no doubt that with a win under their belt, they’ll feel much better.
