A centenarian’s 100th birthday party was an Ipswich Town-themed bash as the community celebrated his remarkable life.
On reaching the century milestone, Avocet Court resident Peter Smith credited his long life to the joys of family and the seven decades he spent with his wife, Doris.
Mr Smith said of reaching the milestone: “Be contented with what you have.”
The birthday bash at the Ipswich care home was a fitting homage to Mr Smith, a Suffolk native, known for his dedication and impressive accomplishments.
The party paid tribute to his love for Ipswich Town FC by decking out the venue in blue.
Full of joy, he anticipates another reason to rejoice as the team is preparing to compete in the Premier League next season.
The thematic celebration included an Ipswich Town cake and photos of Mr Smith from yesteryears filling the venue.
Born in 1924, Mr Smith grew up in Felixstowe with two sisters.
He showed a competitive spirit in his youth, running as a part of the Suffolk relay team and playing centre forward in football.
His service to the country during the Second World War as a Royal Marine was matched with time spent across various industries in Ipswich.
It included a 21-year stint at Fisons and a caretaking role at Suffolk College, alongside tenure at a cigarette manufacturing company, Churchman’s.
In August 1947, he married his wife Doris.
Their love story began as wartime pen pals and bloomed into a 70-year-long marriage, resulting in two daughters, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His love for life didn’t stop at work – he had numerous hobbies that ranged from breeding chickens to cooking.
Beachside upbringing fostered a lifetime affinity for the seaside and he regularly travelled with his partner.
His present-day routine involves various activities at Avocet Court and watching sports shows on TV.
