Jimmy Tau is one of the few players who got to captain both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
The 44-year-old was known for his tough tackling and leadership qualities during his playing days. Having started his football career at Basotho Tiger, Tau moved to Maritzburg City in 2001 where he played alongside his future Chiefs teammate Mabhuti Khenyeza.
After one season with Maritzburg, Jimmy Tau joined Soweto giants Orlando Pirates. In his first season with the Buccaneers, the lanky ex-defender went on to win the league in the 2002/03 season. After two seasons, Tau was named club captain during Kosta Papić’s tenure when the team lost out on the league to rivals Chiefs.

In 2005, the Kimberley-born star made a surprise switch to Amakhosi shocking many football fans. He became a club legend at Chiefs playing over 200 matches and winning about 10 trophies.
After a season riddled with injuries, Jimmy Tau retired in 2013 at the age of 33. He then pursued business ventures and at one point served as a regional director of Bataung Memorial Tombstones, a tombstone manufacturing company based in Katlehong.
He works at SuperSport as a pundit alongside former teammates such as Phumudzo Manenzhe.
