Kaizer Chiefs drop pursuit of Spurs “diamond” for forward target, according to Soccer Laduma.
During the recently closed PSL transfer window, Chiefs aggressively pursued Cape Town Spurs winger Asanele Velebayi but failed to reach an agreement on the selling price with the Mother City club. With the January transfer window looming, the Amakhosi are now reevaluating their options to strengthen the squad. However, sources close to the club indicate that they may not pursue Velebayi this season.
“As for Asanele (Velebayi), there is nothing from the club yet. They have dropped that player from their wanted list for January and are looking at other players who they could sign,” a source revealed. The club’s top priority has shifted to securing a striker, specifically targeting Fiston Mayele.
Chiefs coach’s confidence in wingers
The insider explained. “The coach feels he can use Wandile Duba and Mfundo Vilakazi on the wings, and with Pule Mmodi also in the team, he has enough options instead of signing Velebayi.” This decision reflects the club’s strategic focus, as all parties involved have agreed that pursuing Velebayi in January is off the table.
Another source echoed this sentiment, stating that any consideration for Velebayi would only occur at the end of the season if the coach determines that he is needed. “It will all depend on the coach. He will analyse the season and come up with next season’s plan, which is when he will decide who should come in and who should leave,” the second source explained.
Striker acquisition takes centre stage
Notably, while Velebayi can also play in central midfield, insiders have clarified that securing a striker remains the club’s primary focus. With Mayele at the top of their list, Chiefs aim to enhance their attacking options ahead of the next season.
As Amakhosi strategize for the upcoming January window, they are prioritising their pursuit of a striker over other positions, including Velebayi’s. The decision to revisit the possibility of signing Velebayi will ultimately hinge on the coach’s evaluation at the end of the season, making it clear that their immediate goals lie elsewhere.
With the January transfer window on the horizon, Kaizer Chiefs are committed to strengthening their squad and are setting their sights firmly on a striker to elevate their performance.
