How Kaizer Chiefs failed to sign Cape Town Spurs skipper

Kaizer Chiefs had their two offers for Cape Town Spurs winger Asanele Velebayi rejected during the recently closed transfer window.

And this was confirmed by Velebayi’s agent Lance Davids in an interview with Andile Ncube on Metro FM.

According to Davids, there was a lot of back and forth between Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town Spurs during the negotiations.

And that had to do with the valuation of Velebayi – Spurs wanted more for the player but Kaizer Chiefs offered less.

Spurs’ first asking price was R12 million, according to Davids, but they lowered it to R10 million when Kaizer Chiefs came back the second time.

Amakhosi tabled a R5 million offer plus players in an attempt to secure Velebayi’s services but Spurs weren’t interested.

Meanwhile, Davids is of the opinion that the Kaizer Chiefs offer to Spurs was fair enough to have at least been considered.

REVEALED: BEHIND KAIZER CHIEFS AND VELEBAYI’S COLLAPSED DEAL

“So, of course, there was a lot of back and forth – Chiefs put in an offer, and the value was too low for Cape Town Spurs,” said Davids as per SABC Sport.

“Chiefs came back with a second offer and gave, in my opinion, a valuation that was very fair with add-ons, and they also didn’t accept that. They thought the valuation was low, and then they stopped just there.

“In my opinion, I thought the valuation that Cape Town Spurs was looking at for Velebayi, compared to Oswin Appollis, it’s a no-brainer – you can’t compare [the two players’ value]. At this point, what did Oswin achieve in the last year?

“So, I think the valuation of Velebayi was crazy; I think Chiefs, to be honest, was very fair on their proposal and, in my opinion, they could have still added some more add-ons.

“Of course, they did not because they thought they were also fair on their proposal, and the deal fell through… I’ll be honest, at first Cape Town Spurs wanted R12 million, they came down to R10 million, and Chiefs’ offer was R5 million plus players.”
