Kaizer Chiefs to transfer list multi million rand star after failing to impress at Naturena.
Chiefs have reportedly decided to place Sibongiseni Mthethwa on the transfer list in January, marking a significant shift for the 30-year-old midfielder. Mthethwa, who joined the club on a three-year deal from Stellenbosch FC just over a year ago, has struggled for consistent game time at Naturena, and the return of central midfielder Njabulo Blom from the United States has only intensified the challenge for the player.
Sources indicate that Mthethwa has yet to feature in a match this season, with coach Nasreddine Nabi reportedly not including him in his long-term plans. “A decision has been made to cut ties with Mthethwa, but because the club paid a lot of money to Stellenbosch when they signed him last year, they won’t release him for free. They will put him on the transfer list and hopefully, they will get a buyer for him,” said a source familiar with the situation.
Mthethwa: Quality player on the transfer market
Despite the lack of playing time, Sibongiseni Mthethwa remains a quality player, and the source believes he won’t lack suitors when Kaizer Chiefs put him up for sale. “He’s a quality player so I’m sure he won’t be short of suitors, but I don’t think Chiefs will get back the amount they spent on him when they bought him from Stellies. Remember, he was a Bafana Bafana player then and didn’t come cheap,” the source added.
With a contract running until June 2026, Mthethwa still has a few years left on his deal with Chiefs. But the club is eager to move him on in the upcoming January transfer window. Chiefs likely want to avoid letting the player leave for free. And the transfer listing aims to secure a deal with a prospective buyer.
Since joining Chiefs, Mthethwa has found it difficult to break into the starting lineup. The addition of Njabulo Blom to the midfield has made it even harder for him to get consistent playing time, leaving him sidelined this season. Despite his past performances for Stellenbosch FC and his involvement in the Bafana Bafana squad. Mthethwa has failed to make a significant impact at Naturena, leading to his eventual transfer listing.
Khoza honours Kaizer Motaung’s legacy
In other news, Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Irvin Khoza recently celebrated Kaizer Motaung’s immense contribution to South African football. During the PSL quadrennial general meeting in Sandton. Khoza presented Motaung with a R2 million birthday gift to mark his 80th birthday.
“I would like to ask the members of the Exco [Executive Committee] to grant me permission to grant Dr. Motaung R2 million to spoil himself,” said Khoza. “Dr. Kaizer Motaung has worked hard for himself. I know the pain and agony you went through to build an institution like Kaizer Chiefs and the NSL. May God bless you.”
Together, Khoza and Motaung played a pivotal role in the formation of the Premier Soccer League in 1996. Which replaced the National Soccer League (NSL).
As Kaizer Chiefs prepare to offload Sibongiseni Mthethwa in January, the midfielder’s future remains uncertain. With the club unlikely to recoup the full amount spent on him, Mthethwa will likely seek a new challenge elsewhere. Fans and clubs alike will closely monitor the situation. Waiting to see where the experienced player will land next in his career.
