The Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates might not take place in Soweto.
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are set to clash in the first edition of the 2024/25 BetWay Premiership season on 1 February, 2025.
However, there is a chance the eagerly anticipated Soweto derby may take place outside in Durban.
CHIEFS VS PIRATES TO BE TAKEN OUT OF SOWETO?
Imagine the Soweto derby between Chiefs and Pirates not taking place in Soweto.
Moreover, imagine Amakhosi vs the Bucs in Durban.
This is the vision of the KwaZulu Natal government who are striving to bring the Soweto derby to eThekwini.
“The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government is pushing to have February’s Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates played at Moses Mabhida Stadium,” Goal stated.
KZN MEC MEMBER MEETS WITH AMAKHOSI AND BUCS
The KZN government have recently sent their Sports MEC to talk to Chiefs and Pirates.
“I have also met with Orlando Pirates management, including Dr Irvin Khoza, and Kaizer Chiefs management, meeting Bobby Motaung as Kaizer Motaung was abroad,” Kwazulu-Natal Member of the Executive Council for Sport Mntomuhle Khawula
So, The Moses Mabhida Stadium is currently Amakhosi’s alternative stadium. Meanwhile, it is also registered as Pirates’ alternative venue. This, despite the Bucs seldomly using the venue in the PSL although they have played and won several domestic trophies at this venue.
Therefore, the possibility of a future Soweto derby in Durban is possible. Meanwhile, Benni McCarthy recently discussed Chiefs and Pirates.
